Google Tech Talks November 13, 2007 ABSTRACT Yahoo!’s Exceptional Performance Team has identified 14 best practices for making web pages faster. These best practices have proven to reduce response times of Yahoo! properties by 25-50%. They focus on the front-end, for example, why it’s bad to use “@import” for including stylesheets and why ETags disable browser caching. In this talk I’ll go in-depth on these best practices and the research behind them. I’ll also demonstrate YSlow and do some live performance analysis of popular web sites. After an injured retriever is hit by a car, its puppy (a german shephard mix) protects it from both oncoming traffic and rescue workers. Miraculously both dogs are okay!

Thomas Edison was (among many other things) travelling and filming in various parts of the world round the turn of last century. He was in Paris for the Universal Exposition of 1900, catching a myriad of angles on the city, such as the carriages, buses and pedestrians at the Place de L’Opera and in London in 1903 – again catching the life of the streets, though now in much clearer film footage due to the technological advances in film stock over the three years. Though – curiously – the camera is much more static. Both these productions are (for me at least) like serious time traveling – you get up close and personal with ordinary people going about their daily business, like taking a taxi at one of the entrances to Hyde Park and catching boats at the Embankment on the Thames – perhaps to work. There’s the general bustle of the traffic, with individuals occasionally moving into the middle or into the foreground to make a more human connection. There are familiar landmarks, such as the Law Courts, Sir Christopher Wren’s St Mary-Le-Strand and Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Familiar brand names flash up every so often, like old friends – just to bring this world a little closer to our own – such as Nestles and Lipton’s Tea. And there’s the (perhaps unexpected) chaos of the traffic in often dust-clogged streets.

Aerial Filmworks is working with the Grand Canyon National Park to film the national park using the Cineflex V14HD. This amazing gyro-stabilized aerial system uses an integrated Sony CineAlta HDC1500 camera. The lens is a 42x 9.7mm Fujinon. All footage was recorded 1080/23.98p dual-link 4:4:4 to a Sony SRW1 deck on HDCAM SR tape stock. The original HDCAM SR source tapes were digitized using an AJA Kona3 card to a MacPro 8 core with 17Gb RAM, and edited with Final Cut Pro at our inhouse edit suite. The Cineflex V14HD was mounted on the nose of a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger helicopter. We worked closely with the national park to make sure all permissions and permits were in place. Daily updates to local air traffic control and the tour helicopter companies were sent on flight days. Our pilot was specifically approved for the operation by the FAA and Department of Interior. We mapped reference points to the GPS and input sensitive condor nesting areas that we needed to avoid. Natural resource and wildlife managers reviewed our flight plans. The Aerial Filmworks team believes in doing our part to maintain a carbon neutral planet. Through a partnership with TerraPass, we invest in carbon offsets for every hour of flight time that our Cineflex equipment is on a helicopter.
